The Scarlet Letter
First of all, I would like to briefly tell you about the book. It is one of the first works of American literature, perhaps the most famous Scarlet Letter or, as it is also called, the Red Stain. The author of the book, Nathaniel Hawthorne, tells the reader in detail about his own life and the circumstances of that time in the Custom House section. Nathaniel Hawthorne, previously working in the customs office, loses his political position because of the newly elected government and begins to write The Scarlet Letter. The purpose of The Scarlet Letter manuscript is a handwriting he found while working at the customs office and a piece of fabric found on it. The letter "A", located on the piece of fabric, attracts your attention and he's reading the manuscript of a man named Jonathan Poe. He is editing a book called The Scarlet Letter because of that manuscript and the letter "A" on the piece of fabric in his hand. So, it gets its name from the red letter A, which is the symbol of the main character of the book, Hester. This book is a real forbidden love book. And, on each page, events of a lecture nature are described.
Secondly, I would like to tell you about the subject of the book, the message that I would like to be given. The Red Stain conveys to the reader a forbidden love, a great sin and the place of a woman of the 1800s in society in a very beautiful way. The main characters of the book are Hester Prynne, Roger Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Pearl. Hester Prynne is a very beautiful and young woman. He has just arrived in America and has started living in Salem. Her husband didn't make it to Salem for a long time, so he's presumed dead at sea. Hester lives in a city where there are Puritans. The Puritan society is part of the Protestant denomination and has very strict rules. One day, Hester gives birth, but the father of the child is not clear. According to the Puritans, Hester is punished very severely for committing a very big sin. The Puritans, in public, place a red letter A on his chest. He has to carry this letter A until he dies. The meaning of the letter A is "Adultery", that is, adultery. After this shameful punishment, they throw her in jail, and while she is in prison, her husband arrives in disguise. No one knows her husband, but as soon as Hester sees her husband, she shudders and starts screaming. Her husband is a very knowledgeable man, and before he arrives in Salem, he learns new drug techniques from them while he is being held captive by the locals. Using these techniques, he introduces himself as a doctor. He tries to find out the boy's father. Hester refuses to reveal the child's father. Despite this, Chillingworth tells him that he will find the boy's father at any cost. By the way, I would like to decipher a parenthesis. Hester's husband is older than her, and outwardly his left shoulder is above. It is also used as a symbol of the devil in literature. Hester's husband, Chillingworth, is out for revenge, but he thinks that the culprit is not Hester, but the child's father. Hester gets out of prison and devotes herself to charity. Society ostracizes him and constantly crushes him with his words. Hester turns into a very cold woman now. The Puritans think Pearl is Hester's daughter, the devil's child. While reading the book, it becomes clear that some of Pearl's movements are strange. The Buddha reveals that he is not a normal child. In the first chapters of the book, it becomes obvious that Arthur Dimesdale is the father of the child. Arthur is a respectable clergyman in the eyes of the Puritans, and he does not reveal the truth for fear of losing that respectability. Hester also chooses to hide the truth from her love for him. 7 years pass by, and Hester is no longer dec despised by society as before. The reason is that Hester devotes herself to charity. They begin to see the letter "A" on their chest as an "angel", that is, an angel. But that doesn't change anything because he's still a sinner. Arthur cannot bear this sin any longer and becomes ill. Chilingworth becomes her doctor and lives in the same house as her. He promised Hester Chilingworth that he would not reveal Chilingworth's identity to anyone while he was in prison. Chilingwoth gathered from the evidence that the child's father was Arthur, the "A"-shaped wound that later appeared on his chest, Arthur's compassion for Hester, etc. he finds out about her and begins to slowly poison her. Hester tells Chillingworth that she will break her vow, and he tells Arthur the truth. One day, when the new president is elected, Arthur goes up to the platform where Hester is being punished and explains the facts. Chillingworth tries to stop him, but to no avail. He couldn't get his revenge, Chilingworth. But Arthur loses his life on the spot. Many years pass, after the death of Hester Chilingworth, she disappears for a while.
Third, I would like to share with you my comments on the book and the films. I must say that the book form of this work, the plot of which I admire, is many times more successful than films. I have read his book and watched both movies, but I would like to say with regret that the movies are a big disaster next to the book. It is possible to say that the fact that the first film without dialogue reduces the clarity of events, while the fact that it is in black and white makes the story less effective. The second film deviates completely from the story and is based only on romance. The most important thing to focus on is the position of the woman in the past period, and while the strict protestant denomination should have an impact on people, it is a dramatized love story that we watched in the movie. There are dozens of differences between books and films. I've seen it written and shaped, both from different angles. But, If I hadn't read your book,if I had just watched the movie, I would have taken out a meaning far beyond the desired message to be given. I have read the book very fondly and it has become one of my favorite, most impressed book. I will gladly recommend this book to everyone. The only thing I don't like about the book is that the author takes the side of the priest in all respects, making him innocent, creating the impression of being a victim of Hester's rebellious strong personality. Finally, he declares that both the husband and the lover can be friends in the other world, because in fact they are both victims. Hester, on the other hand, turns into this stereotypical criminal who returns to the crime scene after many years. It is not fair for all woman.
Finally, I was very impressed to read this book at such a time. Although it didn't surprise me to see her despised and humiliated since the past, it couldn't stop me from feeling sad. no woman under the name of religion, sect should be punished for something she has done,an incident she has experienced. As we have seen in the story, the men who have experienced the same incident are not punished, it is not even deducted that they have done wrong. This distinction pisses me off and definitely doesn't sound fair. I hope that no woman will experience discrimination, be punished and be despised, regardless of whether she is under the name of religion. I hope that all women will be able to stand up straight in the face of such bad events as Heste.
